How to: Recharge Alkaline Batteries

October 11th, 2005

Afroman’s guide to recharging alkaline batteries includes not only how to save money on old batteries, but also how to build the charger to do it. His metaphors are a little rough around the edges, but I’ve long held a theory that it’s not as unsafe to recharge the “non-rechargables” as they claim. Afroman busts the myth wide open.

read the article on recharging alkaline cells, great stuff as i tried it a few years ago, will have to try your diode constant current cct. the method i used was a 555 timer IC, administrating 800ms 3v pulses with a current of about 70mA into the cell, with a gap of about 1s in between pulses. took all day to charge one AA cell. but i then got a voltage of 1.65v, so i put it in a clock and the clock kept perfect time for nearly 2 years. this pleased me.
