iTunesHelper.ex.exe has generated errors…

March 22nd, 2006

I’ve got a small problem with my iTunes and ipod—they’re no longer talking to each other. It seems to be related to an error I started getting a few days ago, “iTunesHelper.ex.exe has generated errors and will be closed by windows. You will need to restart the program.”

I did a search and found one other poor soul that seems to have had the exact same error, but this was back in 2004. Unfortunately no one responded to his request:

I’ve installed the software that came with my iPod but keep getting a Program Error “iTunesHelper.ex.exe has generated errors and will be closed by windows. You will need to restart the program”. When I open iTunes I then get another error message “The software required for communicating with the iPod is not installed correctly. Please reinstall iTunes to install the iPod’s software”. I’ve uninstalled and re-installed the iTunes software about 20 times and still can’t get it to work. Can anyone help me?

And since his plea went unanswered, my question is: can anybody help me? I haven’t reinstalled 20 times yet, but twice and it still hasn’t done the trick. Perhaps somebody visiting has had the same problem and knows how to fix it?

Have you searched for an ipod update? Sometimes it requres you to download a security update on the ipod.

I tried uninstalling and reinstalling iPodSetup.exe as well as iTunesSetup.exe but it didn’t have any affect.

When I run iTunes it still says, “The software required for communicating with the iPod is not installed correctly. Please reinstall iTunes to install the iPod’s software”.

  4. Jeff Milner says:

Not having iTunes working isn’t such a big deal right now, because I don’t have any new music to add to my iPod at the moment anyway, but until it’s fixed I’ll just have to listen to any new podcasts on the computer.

Jeff i am leaving you a meesage about the stairway to heaven backwords. The full backwords lyrics. I have done an interpretation of it. When it says opstioner it is talking about saten. he is singing to satan. all on trak all arriving. is everyone getting to church. on track is them on the right track is them being in a relationship with god.all singing all as one is them worshoping god. the mass is the church mass obviously. in in sin goes the river. the river swells. meaning its upset with him for selling his soul to the devil. consider that it is said that the members of led zeppelin sold thiere souls to the devil. the lord speaksto him and he is suprized. will god save him.. no cause he sold his soul to the devil witch is said by i cant be saved for i live with satan. all pray for three to come in late. three meaning the other three members in the band. the evil toolshed is mr. crowleys old house. perhaps were they sold hier souls to the devil in a ritual? skip down to hunt near the shore. he is out side of heaven trying to get in. he thinks no one can see him. someday =when he dies, failed=cant get into heaven, and gotta leave forsaken=cant change and get into heaven cause he sould his soul to the devil. no wimps can do refers to wimp being someone who gives into satan. no wimp can get into heaven. ok so now mass is ended. he wants satan to hear his show. and asks that all bad that comes from his sowrn music be shushed with snow. this may refer to he regrets selling his soul and doesnt want his music to lead others down the road to hell. he uses snow to fight fire. hot vs cold. that is most of it but i wanna hear what you think of this. note i am only 17 a huge led zeppelin fan. o and by the way. on the cd how the wast was won live version. i heard the message to. almost clearer then the origanal. i tried it on both reversing it myself. i hope to hear from you. love your site. never top rockin

  7. Matt says:

Well i dont have an ipod but i think your itunes is out of date. you may just have to download the latest one off the net.
    good luck

  8. Jeff Milner says:

I tried that. No luck. I’m going to reinstall windows on a new hard drive that I just bought because after all these years it’ll probably do a world of good, not just in getting my iPod running with iTunes again.

  9. Dan Scott says:

I have almost the same problem when I open Itunes.

First it says, “Updating Itunes library”

Then it says, “Itunes.exe has generated errors and will be closed by windows. You will need to restart the program.”

“An error log is being created”

    Cannot find the problem.

    Dan

  10. Dan Scott says:

After all my research, I think I have finally found the problem with the error message “Itunes.exe has generated errors and will be closed by windows. You will need to restart the program.”

It is windows2000. Now all I have to do is find a fix. Hmmm! Wonder how friendly microsoft will be this morning?

  12. Angie says:

OK, I’m so glad to know I’m not the only one with the error message about itunes not being able to connect with the ipod! I have reinstalled a dozen times, downloaded from the internet, and still no luck! I’ve had my ipod since last August and can’t use it on my computer. I’ve used it on other people’s computers and it works just fine! I hope someone comes up with a solution soon befor I go nuts! Please e-mail me if the answer is found. I’m desperate!!

  13. Michele says:

Well I finally got a message asking me to downloaded the latest version of ipod software. I thought I had already downloaded it but I figured it couldn’t hurt to try again. I think it was 7.0 or something like that. Anyway, my ipod is now working!!! Try updating the software again!! Also Angie, is there another user on your computer who has already set up a different ipod? If so you will have to create a whole seperate user identity for yourself and log into it before setting up your ipod. Wish I could help more but I’m not the most computer saavy! Sorry! Good luck!!

    iTunes.exe has generated an error…

I searched the web and could not find the specific steps to overcome this problem and so I synthesized the thoughts expressed in a variety of threads. The following procedure worked on my machine. The problems on my machine resulted from prior installations of Quicktime. iTunes will not run if Quicktime fails.

The intention is to remove all iTunes and Quicktime software references. The following steps remove the software traces and worked on my machine.

    1. Using add/remove programs uninstall Quicktime (click on Start –> Settings –> Control Panel –> Add/Remove Programs)

    2. Using add/remove programs uninstall iTunes

    3. Right click on My Computer, use Search and remove all programs named Quicktime

    4. Right click on My Computer, use Search and remove all programs named iTunes (except your iTunes download, so you won’t have to sit through another long download session).

    5. Left click on Start, click Run, type “regedit”, go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE, click on SOFTWARE, and remove the Apple Programs folder (you may want to check in case you have other Apple applications, but all I had were iTunes and Quicktime in my Apple folder).

Steps 1 through 5 should remove all traces of the software and now you can install iTunes.

    Good Luck

  20. Gordon says:

I too am getting the same error as of a recent auto-update. I have uninstalled and reinstalled about 5 times (including removing all quicktime, itunes, and ipod files as well as removing the Apple registry folder) and I am still getting this error. Any ideas?

  21. ipod sucks says:

did anyone ask apple.com about this?

  22. Rosemary says:

Hi. I too am having the iTunes.exe has generated an error… problem. I contacted Apple and they told me to upgrade from 2000 to XP or Vista. Not helpful at all! If anybody out there knows how to sort this problem I would be most grateful. I have an iPod that is yet to be used because of this infernal glitch.

  23. Ana says:

has anyone found a solution yet? its driving me crazy!

  24. Hanson says:

OK i think i have the solution…at least, i have Windows 2000 and this worked on my computer.

Use the 5 steps that Tomn listed above. Before the final step, also search “apple” and delete everything related to apple. (Try not to delete your itunes music folder when you are doing all of these searches because then you might have to re-convert all of your songs)

You might have to enter safe mode in order to delete some files. Do this if you get the error message saying “cannot open file: cannot read file source or disk” or something along those lines.

Once you have deleted everything you were able to, install the latest version of quicktime that you can according to your OS. I have Windows 2000, so i downloaded version 7.1.6 at:

    http://filehippo.com/download_quicktime_player/tech/?2607

Once quicktime is installed, download the latest version of itunes that works for your computer. For Windows 2000, it is version 7.3:

    http://filehippo.com/download_itunes/tech/?2877

    Hope this helps!!

    RESOLUTION:

I had the same issue with a different application. The issue appears to be in regards to decompression when opening the file in Windows 2000 SP4 (possibly earlier SP also).

Resolution was much simpler than I thought. I re-installed windows, same problem.

    Resolution:

    Open Windows Update
Tell it to download and install the latest version of the software.
Allow it to do it’s thing, when it gets to the screen with the options of Express / Custom Updates you can close the window.
    Problem resolved.

    Reason:
It appears that the program utilises a service called BITS, which Microsoft provides for use with the Windows Update service.
Installing this (see resolution) seems to allow the program to then operate properly.

Another interesting thing I noticed is that most if not all people that were complaining about the problem seemed to be using apps written in Delphi.
I’m not sure if that is the case with this app, but still … interesting.

    Good Luck

  26. Brian Tichy says:

I have created an app in Delphi that is experiencing this same error. So in your resolution, are you saying you don’t actually do the update, but stop the process at the Express/Custom screen? If you do the update, will the problem still be fixed?

    Thanks for the help,
    Brian
