Subliminal Messages Psychology Materials
December 15th, 2006I occasionally get requests for materials for psychology classrooms based on the backmasking section of my website. I usually don’t send out materials, but I have been known to make exceptions, especially for professors of post secondary institutions.
I should point out that if you are teaching psychology, you may be interested in material intended for classroom demonstrations by writing John Vokey or Don Read at
and requesting “University of Lethbridge, Department of Psychology, Technical Report No. 85–01″. A blank cassette tape should be enclosed if classroom demonstrations are desired.
I imagine a blank CD would also work, but I would ask them first just to be safe.

i dont know what i think. some of them, like the ones in which say this is a backwards message; have obviously been created purposefully. but the yoko uno-kiss kiss kiss. thats just plain creepy. im interested to know the release date of this song-before or after john lennons death. if after, that may be some kind of prank added into the song. if before, well, then my views cannot explain. im also interested in something i heard about a long time ago, in films, in which, if you pause and view particular slides, words or messages appear in the shot, such as i the word “sex” in a disney film written in stars, but appearing to fast to see. thanks x

I was a teen when this first hit. It was quite the thing and kind of creeped me out. But it is fascinating to say the least. I have begun doing some research again now that I have kids of my own. The film and print versions of this stuff (asked about by vongrimm) is called subliminal advertising. I did a paper on it back in the 80’s and was able to find quite a bit of info at the time, such as the book called The Clam Plate Orgy. I know that sounds bad, but hey…I didn’t name it! ;) Good luck in your digging. It will make you view printed ads differently!

hey, jeff! i was just experimenting with some songs, and i figured out something. if you play KT Tunstall’s “black horse and a cherry tree” backwards, (you have to backmask the very beginning when she counts) you’ll hear a satanic voice say “Fuck you, douche!”
sorry for the cursing, but thats what it says.

Well, at first I was skeptical about the reverse of some songs, but when I tried it for Stairway, it was the exact same thing you got! Makes me wonder if it was intended or not, but I find it hard to not be intentional when you have full sentences being said. But that is my opinion, anyways, this made me start doing this to almost my entire music library. Thanks for giving me something to do in my spare time!

what music player do you have to use in order to play the songs backwards? must it be records?

Nobody has made mention of the Madonna Song: “Like A Prayer”. Right at the beginning when she is singing “Life is a Mystery. Everyone must stand alone.”, if you play that part backwards, you hear exactly who she is calling and praying out to….
“Hear Us…Save Us Satan!”

Hey, if you play Hillary Duff’s “So Yesterday” at the part where she says “at least not today”, it sounds like she says “hail this nazi land”. It’s pretty creepy.

I think many bands played with getting a freaky line into a song for kicks or out of boredom.
All you have to do is record a few choice words, play it backwards, and if it sounds clear enough like something else, use the backwards line in the song and whola …. a little secret for your future amusement. If … your band makes it big enough for anyone to care.

Well since we do not have Audacity or any such software IN us we needn’t worry. But your work is very good Jeff.
