All Your Bases Are Belong to Us
May 6th, 2008The following video from ESPN is a testament to why we play sports and that there is hope for humanity. I’m not much of a baseball fan myself, but rest assured, if your heart is beating then you will enjoy this:
Hit play or watch at ESPN.
Here is the video on YouTube. It just goes to show, you can’t trust ESPN to keep their content online.

I had my class watch this video this morning. They reflected on it in their journal writing. It was a good example for the “Circle of Courage”. It demonstrated the generosity trait.

I’m not familiar with the specific concept, “circle of courage”.
It’s interesting on multiple levels, one of which that I find particularly interesting (at least tonight) is the choice to reward ratios that the giving girls received for their actions.
Option 1: leave the girl on first base thereby reducing the other teams score and potentially getting a win.
Option 2: Carrying the girl around the bases thereby increasing the other teams score and potentially getting a loss, but also getting something deeper than that, the feeling you get from altruism (and as it turns out a multiplied altruistic feeling when the story aired on TV).
Option 2 has the overall greatest benefit to everyone.
I want to point out that something inside me really grooves on the idea that the rules of baseball forbid the injured players own teammates from helping her, and creates the opportunity for the other team to make that choice.

Wow.
Like you said, it gives hope doesn’t it.

ESPN, by not archiving your video, you’ve just taught me never to link to ESPN content again. To everyone else, you can now view the video here.
