Kayakers Going Over Waterfalls

July 3rd, 2008

After running Lundbreck Falls in my kayak last month, the sport of running big waterfalls has been on my mind. I’m not too interested in doing anything bigger or scarier just yet, but the photos in this news story are even more awesome after having experienced my own little 30 foot drop over some falls.

Kayaker Ben Stookesberry going over Lower Mesa Falls

Just to be clear, that’s not me in the photo, nor anyone I know. See more here.

This photo doesn’t look real to me. The kayaker, the two spectators and the top spectator’s backpack all look edited into the photo. The contrast is wrong between the scenery and the people and the shadows aren’t consistent.

On top of all that, and I could be mistaken, because I don’t know the terrain, but it looks like it was taken from an aircraft, not from a tall vantage point. There is another photo on the site taken from what appears to be the exact same spot. Which would be almost impossible from an aircraft. The crop is different which makes comparisons more difficult, but I doubt authenticity.

There are some more kayaking shots with different vantage points of what appear to be the same waterfall runs at the photographers site: http://www.lucasgilman.com/.
