Quirkology - The Missing Piece

September 17th, 2008

See if you can figure out how psychology professor Richard Wiseman creates space for the missing piece. I have to admit, even though I’ve seen tricks like this before, it took me 3 or 4 times through to figure it out completely.

Hit play or watch The Missing Piece at Youtube.

He flipped the four pieces over, and they had different parts of the picture on them than their opposite sides.

That’s a clever trick. A bit of deception. It looks like he’s drawn the chalk mark just that bit larger than the actual initial shape. And when he rearranges the shapes, even just an extra 0.5cm taken up around the border would be enough to make room for that extra piece.

As for the design, I have to agree with Kim and it’s probably printed differently on the back.
