Olympic Swim
August 14th, 2008As I’ve mentioned (many times to anyone that cares to listen) my former house-mate is Canada’s fastest swimmer in the 50m freestyle. This morning at around 4:30am local time he will be swimming in Beijing!
I saw Richard’s photo on Yahoo News (same photo here) and caught a couple clips of him swimming and on deck on the CBC a couple nights ago. (I also saw his roommate Jonas swimming tonight too—he competed in the 100m breast).

Jim Steacy Going to Beijing
July 22nd, 2008Another acquaintance of mine, Jim Steacy, qualified for the 2008 Beijing Olympics. The CBC wrote this article about Jim and his amazing hammer throwing skills.
I remember a couple of years ago, the night after the University’s Blue and Gold banquet (he won athlete of the year that night), most of the athletes were pretty tired after staying out late partying and I just happened to be driving by the track field early the next morning. Guess who was up bright and early and out practising by himself—Jim Steacy.

Richard Hortness is Going to the Olympics!

I found out yesterday that my former teammate (and roommate), Richard Hortness, is going to China for the 2008 Olympics. He placed third in prelims with a personal best time of 49.42 in the 100 metre freestyle and his fifth place finish in finals makes him one of the five swimmers who will make up the Canadian Mens 4×100 freestyle relay team.
Technically, Richard is the alternate, but will likely swim preliminary heats at Beijing.
Today he will be trying to win or come second in the 50 free. If he comes second and makes the FINA A time standard he will also compete in this event in Beijing.
Congratulations Richard, and good luck today!

I’m Looking for Olympic Swimming BitTorrent Links
August 11th, 2004I read an article by Matt Haughey on possible ways of using BitTorrent to broadcast the Olympics.
It made me wonder if I will be able to find swimming torrents. So far my google searches have turned up nothing but I’m hoping that either something new will show up on Suprnova.org once the Olympics start, or perhaps someone reading this will be able to point me in the right direction.
