Michael Moore Announcement Publicity Stunt?

Michael Moore refutes recent news articles about trying to create a publicity stunt with his new anti-Bush movie, Farenheit 911. He convincingly lays out the situation on his site, allowing you to be the judge:

“Michael Moore has known for a year that we will not distribute this movie, so this is not news.” Yes, that is what I thought, too, except Disney kept sending us all that money to make the movie. Miramax said there was no problem. I got the idea that everything was fine.

“It is not in the best interests of our company to distribute a partisan political film that may offend some of our customers.” Hmmm. Disney doesn’t distribute work that has partisan politics? Disney distributes and syndicates the Sean Hannity radio show every day? I get to listen to Rush Limbaugh every day on Disney-owned WABC. I also seem to remember that Disney distributed a very partisan political movie during a Congressional election year, 1998—a film called The Big One… by, um… ME!

New Job

I got the job working as a New Media Movie Camp Instructor. I’ll be working at the University for the month of July giving four, week long camps. I’m pretty excited about it but because it’s still almost two months away I don’t have much to say about it yet.

Andy Kaufman – Dead or Alive?

Remember Jim Carrey in “Man on the Moon“? He played the character of performance artist / comedian Andy Kaufman. LA Weekly shares a brief history of Kaufman while simultaneously sparking life to the idea (as portrayed in the film) that Andy might return from the dead. He died on May 16th, 1984 but he had mentioned the idea of faking his own death and returning 20 years later. One week from today marks the 20th anniversary of his “death”, and some people believe he might actually show up that night at the House of Blues show. Whether or not he shows up is anyone’s guess but either way, I have a feeling we’re going to be hearing more about this.

Michael Moore is a big, fat, publicity producing, liar!

I was duped too. Turns out the whole story about Disney recently saying it won’t distribute Moore’s new film, Fahrenheit 9/11, is nothing more than a publicity stunt. He knew all along that they weren’t interested.

“[I]n the CNN interview he said: “Almost a year ago, after we’d started making the film, the chairman of Disney, Michael Eisner, told my agent he was upset Miramax had made the film and he will not distribute it.”

Sparklers + Inside = Fire!

Anna’s mom gave her some sparklers a long time ago but we never ended up using them. She came into the computer room today and asked if it would be ok to light one in the house. I was surprised that she asked me, but she must have doubted something about the idea anyway I told her to go ahead. I said if something bad happens she could always run out the back door and throw it in the dog’s water. Um, about 6 seconds into the burning of the sparkler I suggested she write her name and burn it into her retina. Well the flinging motion of the sparkler caused a bit of hot burning metal to fall onto a piece of paper hanging on the bulletin board and then burned through onto the floor. All Anna could say in surprise was, “Oh no! Something bad DID happen.” We now have a little black mark on the hard wood floor to remind us of the dangers of sparklers.

Disney Blocks Moore’s New Anti-Bush Movie

The Walt Disney Company is blocking its Miramax division from distributing a new documentary by Michael Moore that harshly criticizes President Bush, tracing the links between the Bush family and Saudis like Osama bin Laden.

Mr. Moore’s agent, Ari Emanuel, said Michael D. Eisner, Disney’s chief executive, asked him last spring to pull out of the deal with Miramax. Mr. Emanuel said Mr. Eisner expressed particular concern that it would endanger tax breaks Disney receives for its theme park, hotels and other ventures in Florida, where Mr. Bush’s brother, Jeb, is governor.

While Emanuel admits that Michael Eisner asked him not to sell this movie to Harvey Weinstein, he defiantly states, “that doesn’t mean I listened to him.”

According to news sources Miramax and Disney spokespeople had no comment, but Moore on the other hand did.

“Some people may be afraid of this movie because of what it will show,” Moore wrote. “But there’s nothing they can do about it now because it’s done, it’s awesome, and if I have anything to say about it, you’ll see it this summer — because, after all, it is a free country.”

Fahrenheit 9/11 is one of the films in competition at the upcoming Cannes Film Festival.

Kevin Mitnick a Hero?

For those of you that don’t know, Kevin Mitnick is the famous hacker that was all over the news way back when for being a hacker. They also based the movie Hackers on his story.

Via Plastic QL:

Kevin Mitnick has been labelled a hero in the small town of River Rouge, Michigan where he helped capture a 15-year old student who was phoning in bomb threats into the local high school. How did he do it? “I gave them the same techniques that [Tsutomu] Shimomura used to track me.”

Here’s a version of the story in by Kevin Poulsen in The Register.
