Backmasking

I've decided to add a little something to my backmasking page. So for now I'm working on adding Britney Spears - Hit Me Baby One More Time, Queen - Another One Bites the Dust, and The Beatles - I'm So Tired. I might be tempted to add more after these ones are completed and online. This post would be a good place to comment on other songs you'd like to hear backward samples from (of songs that are known for backmasking).

Update May 23rd, 2004: The new backmasking additions are up.

Update: June 9th, 2004: I just added Pink Floyd's "Empty Spaces" to the backmasking page.

The queen song you chose is not a good example... the one here is a better version:

Thanks, I've updated it.

HEY!! just got a few comments...

-in "Stairway to heaven" your discription of the lyrics say " He'll give you give you 666,..." i understood it as " He'll give you room 666,..."

-in "Another one bites the dust" you said "its fun to smoke marijuana" I actually heard "Start to smoke Marijuana"

-In "hit me baby one more time" you said "sleep with me,I'm not too young.' I heard " See me, im not too young"

-In "I'm so tierd" you said "Paul is a dead man, miss him, miss him, miss him" I heard " my hun is dead man, miss him, miss him, miss him."

There is actually a complete website listing countless amounts of examples of backmasking out there. The URL is www.backmaskonline.com

Well, you have certainly caused a stir here. It seems that everybody is flocking to your site. Nice work. I must tell you, though, you have it wrong. Here are the lyrics to the part that you have on your site:

So here's to my Sweet Satan.
The other's little path
Would make me sad,
Whose power is faith.
He'll give those with him 666.
And all the evil fools,
they know he made
us suffer sadly.

I have discovered that the ENTIRE Stairway To Heaven is a full and COMPLETE backwards message. EVERY word from start to finish is undeniable and distinguishable. Easily heard if you know what to look for. I wired an old record player's motor to run in reverse, and got out my old copy of the album. It's very scary. As I played it backwards last night over 10 times, I got chills down my spine every time. How it was done, I haven't a clue. I have changed my opinion that the computer is the best vehicle to listen to it backwards. It was definitely made for vinyl, and the needle moving in the wrong direction combined with the grooves of the record make it clearer. I don't think that the computer can duplicate that. THIS below is the absolute and correct translation of the lyrics to 'Stairway To Hell' WORD FOR WORD without any chance of there being any mistakes. Trust me, THIS IS IT:

Plaaaay backwards,
Hear why its sung here, oppositioner..
Allll
on track, all arriving
They all sing, and they are one.
Shall I loathe you now, parishoner?
Oh hear Him, Christian within me.
It stirs my sin; the river,
Oh, she swells with our lousiness.
All my life will end for him?
We're all out of signs,
I know I'm sorta shocked
To hear The Lord,
My God now will save me!
Oh I will n'er be saved,
Because I live with Satan..
One wish today;
That you'll all pray for
Three who will make it here late.
Pray now and you'll see..
The 'Lord' turned me on,
But, oh, I was the shaggy fool..
Clothed in agony,
Lost at a height.
There's no escaping it,
Nor his woes..
So here's to my Sweet Satan.
The other's little path
Would make me sad,
Whose power is faith.
He'll give those with him 666.
And all the evil fools,
they know he made
us suffer sadly.
Ohohohoh...
"Family won't get loose,
They're offered me."
Always soothes the worker.
Always will be as we know now
"I see ruins," said he,
"the world they offered me?
Who wished the Lord's fall?"
If we lose feather,
Say you'll save me!

And no wimps can bend the rules..
And no wimps can do..

Hunt next to the shore,
'Cause they see all from there,
See here's the news,
Who walks with mute grief!
Perhaps no-one found thee...
"Heavy, lift me out,"
Spake the Reve,
"Someday, failed, we'll lose one line-up,
They've gotta leave forsaken."

And no wimps can do..
And no wimps can do...

He, who say the lords
Thoth have our laws,
Maat must be superb. Mass is ended..
Over there,
He who should learn thee.
Any moot that serves by my sworn music,
I wish it with snow be shushed,
All for my mass's sake.
Hear why its sung,
here, oppositioner, Ohh..
He who should show
May make his show worthy,
To look, for us, odd.. sickly,
There's one chance - take his show.
Hold thy head,
Hear why its sung here. oppositioner.
Who owns this earth built below?
Oh sweet Israel..

I originally posted the lyrics of the entire reversed song above on my website (www.members.rogers.com/zepstair/index2.html)
As most of you, my interest was piqued by J Milner's flash clip and the surprising clarity of the "Here's to my sweet satan" verse.. I figured that if someone could encode one phrase so obviously and clearly, then perhaps there was more backwards messages that people just were not listening hard enough for, so my best mate and I downloaded as many versions of stairway to heaven as could be found (the cd version, the live version, the live version from the "song remains the same", hell even the Pat Boone cover of it), I converted these to wav format and reversed them in sound recorder, then reconverted them back to mp3 and used Media Players playback speed controls to listen to the song over and over in reverse slow motion.. over the course of 2 or 3 weeks my friend and I obsessed over this, trying to decipher every syllable, even destroying both of our father's copies of the original LP by playing them backwards, finding logical meaning arise from seemingly random sounds.

It is my opinion that the backwards version makes as much sense, if not more, than the regularly played forwards version. I'm convinced that this was done intentionally. I read in a Led Zepplin biography that while putting stairway to heaven together, Jimmy Page would spend countless hours alone in the recording studio, working with sound clips a few seconds long and going over and over them.. To me it is obvious that he was trying to perfect his pronunciation of the lyrics for optimal backwards impact, as I broke the entire song into 2 line clips for the purpose of analysis, finding it was much easier to deal with in short segments. I'm sure this was done intentionally, if not for 'shits and giggles' as its been put, then certainly to raise the bar on the creation of music. Of course, if no one ever found it, it would be kind of sad that Page went through all that work, so he left little clues in the forwards lyrics. (If you listen very hard the tune will come to you at last, There are two paths you can go by, sometimes all of our thoughts are misgiven, there's still time to change the road you're on (reverse the song)) I find it especially intriguing that the actual title of the song (Stairway to Heaven) when pronounced as Page sings it, turns into "Play backwards, hear words" when reversed by itself. Try it for yourself, its quite creepy.

Many people have claimed that this was inspired by certain passages of a celtic poem known as "The White Goddess", though if you try to find this, you will more than likely turn up only Robert Grave's works. Interestinly enough, Robert Graves states that the true test of any poet is his depiction of the White Goddess, an archetypal character believed to represent the "sacred feminine" that is, women, the moon. In fact, I believe that all the references in the backwards lyrics to "satan" are indeed intended to be symbollic of the sacred feminine. Before the widespread acceptance of Monotheistic faiths, Pagans worshipped this deity, and with the rise of the church, she was demonized and made evil, and males were decidedly the superior gender, (for the bible states that God made man first and woman was but an inferior offshoot of him) I believe this to be in accordance with the whole nature of the backwards song, which in my opionion, loosely states that those who truely seek the truth will realize that (in a nutshell) Christianity and its ilk are bullshit, and thusly, one turns back to their roots of worshipping the sacred feminine. This is just one theory in a slew of ideas that I've considered, but I felt I needed to write this as I've seen the spread of these lyrics which Matt and I deciphered, which hitherto have never been spoken by the public, and thusly, the misinterpretation of them. People are too apt to say "omggg its satan!!!" without hearing the true meaning of the song.

There is no doubt in my mind that further analysis and translation of these lyrics are needed, and in some cases they seem to be indecipherable, however, I'm surprised there is as much clarity as there is in these lyrics, it means something BOTH WAYS, which is a feat in and of itself. In our translation of this, we were certain of the references to Thoth and Maat near the end, which holds specific meaning with those who are aware of the nature of these egyptian Gods. Thoth was the God of wisdom, law and civilization who supposedly hid his secret "books" of knowledge all over the world, I naturally assume that they are not actually books, but symbollic of hidden secrets, arcane knowledge which is now lost to the general public, if it were ever common knowledge in the first place! I'm not saying that this is one of the books of Thoth, that is silly, but the obvious correlation between the hidden books and the backwards song is amusing to one who has spent many years searching for the obscure secrets of humanity. The second Egyptian God, Maat, was the goddess of truth and perfection, but what really stands out here, to those familiar with the album unofficially dubbed "the 4 signs", is the fact that one symbol is a feather with a circle around it. Why is this significant? Because that very feather used is the egyptian hieroglyph pertaining to Maat, truth. In actuality, that symbol is called "The feather of Maat". Another line in the backwards lyrics specifically states "If we lose feather, say you'll save me." I believe this is a double entendre, referring to the phrase "lose feather", eg, lose hope, fail, become disheartened. However in this context it could actually also mean, "If we lose truth, say you'll save me." Maat was also associated with the egyptian afterlife, which is consistent with the nature of the song, front and back. In the Hall of Judgement, where a soul was deemed worthy to live forever, or to be eaten by the vile soul consumer Ammit, the subjects soul was placed on a scale, on the other side of which was placed the feather of maat. If they were equal, the subject was allowed to progress into the duat. All this is standard occult knowledge.

The song is linked the Aliester Crowley by the well known sign of "Zoso", which he originally and Page eventually adopted as his own. The best explanation I've seen of this symbol is a representation of the star sign capricorn, ruled by saturn. Capricorns ruled by saturn are easily the most wild, eccentric people there are, Page is one, Crowley was one, and I am one. Aliester Crowley is one of the most well known occultists of all time, and, as anyone who has seen The Book Of The Law would agree, a master of manipulation of words and phrases to have multiple and secret meanings.. I think the backwards lyrics to stairway to heaven are a natural expression of this. One line mentions a Reve. It is my assertion that this is the very Reve of "Chaucer's Tales" another document which undoubtedly contains secret knowledge, which I have yet to decipher.

On a closing note, I've heard so much propogation of this "toolshed" lyric that I feel I need to note here the obvious real meaning. People WANT to hear toolshed because so many sites that have only that one verse have told them that is what is being said. I can vouch that I've slowed it down and listened to it hundreds of times for clarification, and it definitely says "All the evil fools they", not "There was a little toolshed." Grammatically, and in light of the rest of the verse, this makes perfect sense. Observe: The verse leading up to this verse states loosely, that you can pray, and coincidence may cause your prays to be "answered" but it will only seem this way because you are so desperate for a God that you are "clothed in agony and lost at a height." So, as Paige puts it, "Heres to my sweet satan.", almost giving a toast to that which has been demonized by the followers of the empty god of the christians, he states that this god's "little path" or perhaps "middle path" would make him sad, because his only power comes from faith. To one who does not believe, God holds no power. "He'll give those with him 666" Shows that the "satan", in whatever form Paige interprets this symbol of evil, will have a manifest effect on his followers, rather than an empty faith which can never be proven, the beast, satan, or whoever this is intended to be, will have some REAL effect on those that follow him, they will be a party to something REAL, rather than a blind faith. This will cause them to follow him, even though their peers, the christians, will think them "evil" for it, but they will follow, disregarding the fact that he has "made them suffer sadly", perhaps by his existence alone hell was deemed a natural consequence, and the christians spread this fact and used to control the people who followed them, to make them suffer the lack of pleasures which has been identified with him.

All this may seem utter bullshit to you, and I welcome contribution or criticism. If you have no belief in this, or can only take words literally, please refrain, forget you ever read this, and move on with your life. Thank you for your time.
