My five-year-old came to me the other day with what sounded like breaking news.

“Santa is just a normal guy!” he exclaimed.

Frowning, I looked at him. I nodded and began wondering if I should have played up the jolly elf a little more.

“He’s just a normal guy who doesn’t even make the presents.”

Sadly, the Christmas magic is gone before it really even started. My thoughts wandered. Obviously the brand names and packaging are a dead giveaway. Good on him for figuring it out at five but he’s too young to be so cynical…

“He’s just a normal guy who doesn’t even make the presents — he just gets the elves to do all the work!”

Nevermind. The magic is alive and well.

Did Coca-Cola Invent Santa

My daughter, at age 4, is already questioning the legitimacy of the Santa Claus story. I haven’t been much help in keeping her in the dark because I try and follow a strict radical honesty policy with my kids. She wants to believe so badly though, so despite my inclination, I try not to destroy the façade. When she could tell I was doubting, she explained that she’s a believer because she actually met Santa when she was little. I guess, in a way, she has me there.

Where did Santa even come from? It’s widely known he’s based on St. Nicholas, a fourth century Christian bishop of Myra, hence his penchant for red outfits, but the Santa Claus we think of today was shaped largely in part by Coca-Cola and a 19th century poem1.

Christmas Papercraft

Back in December I created a papercraft project for my grade 5 students. It’s a cute Christmas scene that I had the students cut out and paint and then glue onto cardstock. I based the Santa design on another papercraft that I found a link for on Pinterest but the original was gone so I whipped up my own version in Adobe Illustrator.
