MUTO a wall painted animation

Knitted Animation Music Video
This amazing music video by Director Simon Laganière, for the Quebec duo Tricot Machine, uses artwork of entirely knitted yarn to animate each frame. (A tricot is a plain, warp-knitted cloth of any of various yarns.)
Over 700 unique knitted pieces were created for the video by designer Lysanne Latulippe of the fashion label Majolie.

Fantoche (2 times) Wall Animation
I did a bit of sketching with charcoal for a drawing class in University. One of the projects I did involved drawing something, erasing it and redrawing the same thing after some action had happened.
Because charcoal leaves marks behind after it’s erased, the original action could be seen behind the new drawing. I repeated these steps about 5 or 6 times. To the left is my artwork (click to view bigger).
It was a lot of work for, what I consider to be, not a great payoff. I like to think that the work has some good conceptual value, even if it’s not that interesting to look at.
The following is a truly amazing wall animation that works on the same principle. (It would have been smart of me to document each step of the process in photographs too).
Realizing how much work went into the poster sized effort I created in University, I’m blown away by the amount of time and effort that it must have taken to create this video. Not only is each individual frame beautifully crafted but the animation is also wonderful. Please enjoy, Fantoche:

Platform
Just for fun, the motion graphics fans out there might enjoy the stop action magic of Platform from motiongrapher.com.
“Smith & Foulkes used a Canon Digital SLR camera linked up to a laptop allowing them to capture frames and play them back checking the shots as they went along. By shooting digitally Smith & Foulkes ended up with a much larger image size to work with when compared with the normal 35mm motion picture frame. These frames were then taken into After Effects and Photoshop for a clean-up where people and rigs from shots were removed. A final grade was then added in Flame.”

It turns out, the secret to making good cartoons is directly proportional to how many pretty girls you have inking the cells.

Le Building
I can’t remember why I never posted a link to Le Building when I first saw it, so I’ll do it now, because it is such a fantastic animated short from the talented students at Gobelins.
For those of you that are curious, the pizza delivery kid is completely CG.
20 Second Animation Contest – Round 1
A couple of guys from down in California, Justin Ridge and Mike Roush, decided to have a contest where they would both animate the same 20 second clip of music. The results are beautiful. They plan to make it a regular event and I can’t wait to see the next submission—but in the meantime here are the results from round one.
I started my own little animation project, but after an unrecoverable hard drive crash, it looks like the project is toast.
Luckily I emailed a friend an early version so at least I have something, but after seeing such an early version again, it breaks my heart that it’s not even remotely close to what it had become. When the hard drive crashed, the project had triple the amount of frames and a more completed look and feel. For what it’s worth, here is my unfinished animation: The Jumper (220k animated gif).
