Yahoo Site of the Day

I forgot to write about this when I found out about it but I guess it’s better late than never. A couple months ago my backmasking page was “Yahoo! Picks” June 3rd selection.

Michael Mills Famous Backmasking Mp3

Back in 1981 a man by the name of Michael Mills created a radio show comprised of many backmasking clips purporting to show that rock music was influenced by satanic forces.

Thanks to the January 12th entry of the 365 days project you can listen to Michael Mills – Hidden & Satanic Messages In Rock Music (9MB mp3).

This 1981 Christian radio show (with host Michael Mills) exposes the threat of secret messages in your Rock and Roll! During the 45 minute radio show he covers a ton of artists… I’m playing 4 of my favourite segments on… Led Zeppelin, Kiss, The Beatles and Queen.

While I did find it interesting to listen to, I hope that you, the astute listener, will pick up on his lack of respect for the scientific process and see his motivation is fuelled by a preconceived hatred for rock music.

For example, not only is Mills sure to tell the listener what they are about to hear, before they have a chance to listen objectively themselves he also plays the backwards clips in such an order as to create a satanic message of his own arranging.

Near the end of the mp3 he shares the story of a young girl that complained that her room turned “an eerie and almost deathly cold” and claims that after she destroyed her KISS albums, the chills went away and we are left to assume the girl lived happily ever after. With his rearranging of backwards clips, his anecdotal evidence and his priming of the audience we know that what he presented is not scientific; clearly his agenda is that of closed minded fanatic.

Having said that, it is of course very entertaining — so enjoy, and be sure to get a permit before destroying your old records in a good old fashioned, satanic cleansing, barrel fire.

Update: Michael Mills and Beatles Forever.

The Devil’s in the Details

I came across a  BoingBoing post about the so-called Devil’s Interval, a musical form suppressed by the Church in the Middle Ages.

The post also talks about a new heavy metal documentary which ties the Devil’s Interval, a specific kind of musical interval that spans three whole tones, with the history of heavy metal.

See the BBC’s report called The Devil’s Music (with mp3 examples), and if it floats your boat, the metal history site (with documentary trailer) Metal: A Headbanger’s Journey.

Oh, and for the record, I’m pretty sure Xeni was just joking when she said, “When you play Wagner backwards, it goes, ‘I LOVE SATAN’. But nevertheless if that’s what you want to hear…

Turn Back!

In 1975, the group Electric Light Orchestra (aka ELO) released an album titled Face the Music. The first song on the record is called Fire on High. It contains a backwards message at the beginning of the song. When played backwards the message, “The music is reversible but time is not. Turn back, turn back, turn back, turn back” is heard.

Fire on High is the most recent addition to my backmasking page.

Backmasking Questions

I haven’t talked specifically about backmasking here for a while, so I thought I would throw out some questions for discussion. What are your thoughts on:

  • Do the messages exist or are they just random sounds that seem like messages?
  • Are the messages intentional?
  • If the messages are/were real, can/could our subconscious minds decipher them and can they influence us?

Discuss.

Calgary

George Stroumboulopoulos and Jeff MilnerBeing a part of the studio audience was a lot of fun. George is one of those rare people whose great TV personality is totally real. He is almost exactly the same one-on-one as he is in front of the nation.

I also enjoyed meeting some of the producers and even the director of Newsworld. The Hour is a great program, one that I never realized was as good as I’ve heard it to be. I’ll be watching more often in the future.

The Hour

CameraSo how long is this show anyway? Um, about 22 minutes. Wait that’s a different “Hour” show.

Ok, enough cheese… I’m going to be on CBC Newsworld’s “The Hour” tonight at 6pm (MST).

For those of you that watched the show (if you came here after 6pm on Tuesday), I know what you came here to see, here it is, Jeff Milner’s backmasking page.

Perhaps you’ll find something interesting in the archives when you are done. Oh and remember, I’m looking for an internship, so if you know anyone that needs someone with great web, Photoshop, 3DS Max, Flash, and design skills, please send them my way.

Legend Backmasking Article

Today I was featured in an article in this month’s issue of the Legend (the University of Lethbridge’s official publication). When I first came to the University I remember thinking, someday I’d like to be in the Legend. I wondered what I could do to get in there.

I’ve had a couple of roommates mentioned for their amazing swimming skills, but as my last semester was approaching I began to think it was never going to happen.

My perspective on things certainly has changed with all the media attention I’ve had lately, but it’s still fun to be in the paper and smile as I brag, “Hey, I’ve hit the pinnicle of fame! I’m in the Legend!”
